It Started With Twelve Girls
In 2010, our founder visited a primary school in Likoni, Mombasa, and met 12 girls who were about to drop out because their families could not raise the fees. She paid them. Eleven of the twelve went on to complete secondary school.
That fee payment became Pure Pearl Foundation. The name stayed because a pearl forms slowly and under pressure, which is also a fair description of the work.
Today we run programmes in three counties — Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale — across girls' education, women's enterprise, youth leadership and coastal environmental work. Northern Kenya is the next region we intend to reach. Every decision still starts with the same question:
“What does she actually need?”

Dignity
The women and girls we work with are partners in the programme, not case files in a report.
Inclusion
We start with the households other programmes miss: girls with disabilities, young mothers, and families off the main roads.
Evidence
Enrolment, retention and household income are recorded every term and published once a year.
Partnership
Every programme is designed with the school, the ward committee and the county office before any money is spent.
Sustainability
Each project is handed over to a local committee with the training, tools and budget to keep it running.
Accountability
Audited accounts, a published safeguarding policy, and staff trained on it every year.
How We Got Here
Fifteen years of work on the coast, one cohort at a time.
Founded in Mombasa
A fees fund for 12 girls at a primary school in Likoni. Eleven of them finished secondary school.
First Full Cohort
Our first 100 scholars sat their KCSE. Most went on to college or university.
Into Kilifi and Kwale
Work moved beyond Mombasa into neighbouring Kilifi and Kwale, reaching about 4,000 women and girls.
First Enterprise Hub
Opened a business hub in Mombasa supporting 200 traders, with savings groups attached to each cohort.
Her Green Future
Started mangrove replanting and village water points with women’s groups in Kilifi and Kwale.
25,000 Reached
Reached roughly 25,000 women and girls across the three counties in a single year.
Northern Kenya
Scoping our first programmes in Garissa, Isiolo and Marsabit, so that what works here can travel north.
